Almost every successful business takes advantage of packaging to make more money. It’s a simple concept. You take products or services that are complementary and you create a package that you sell for one price. Fast food restaurants offer you meals. A burger, fries and a drink for less than what those individual items would cost. Cable companies offer you a package of channels. You feel like you’re getting a deal, but the fact is that these companies are offering things that are easy for them to produce, and they’re making more money overall. And you, as a creative, probably have lots of things that you can produce that you can sell as part of a package that would allow you to charge much more, while giving your clients more, without costing you more.

 

Packaging smartly is a win/win proposition, and if you’re not using smart packaging in your business, you’re likely working too hard for too little and giving your clients less than they need to really get the transformation they’re looking for. 

One of the first things we do when we take on a freelancer as a client, is to get them to think about creating packages (and we’ll give you some real life examples in upcoming posts.) We take them from charging “X” dollars per hour, to creating packages of services that they can sell for $10,000, $20,000, $30,000 a year. We have them set these up so that they get a deposit, (cashflow!) and then they get paid at regular, predictable intervals, and for much more than they could ever make hourly. 

This is different than how most freelancers think, and why they don’t make nearly as much money as they could for doing the thing they are good at. When we get our clients to stop thinking about selling their services by the hour and start to think about creating programs they can sell as a package, they start to make significantly more money.
